Editorial Policy

US Rent Tools aims to give clear, checkable answers: the formula, the rule, the source, and the limits of what the site covers, on the same page as the result. This policy explains how content is written, verified, and corrected.

Verified rules only

A state rule is published only when it is listed on the methodology page with a source. For all other states, guides say “Check official source” rather than borrowing another state’s rule or summarizing an unverified source. City ordinances are flagged as potentially stricter, but are not exhaustively catalogued on this site.

Writing standards

  • State the formula and show the working, so a reader can check the arithmetic by hand.
  • Distinguish a calculator result (arithmetic) from a legal conclusion (which requires coverage, notice, and local rules).
  • Use plain language, define terms such as grace period and prorated rent, and give worked examples with real figures.
  • Do not invent author credentials, awards, user counts, endorsements, or contact details.

Corrections

If an error is reported, it is checked against the official source and the methodology test cases. Confirmed errors are corrected on the calculator, the guide, and the methodology page together, with the last-updated date changed. Unconfirmed claims are not published as rules.
